Efficacy & effects

Improvement of hypoalbuminemia

  • Hypoalbuminemia
View approved original text

This medication helps improve hypoalbuminemia in patients with non-cirrhotic liver disease despite high food intake. This is expected to have a positive effect on overall nutritional status and recovery of liver function.

How to take

Adult dose

Typically, for adults, 1 pouch is orally administered 3 times a day after meals.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with congenital branched-chain amino acid metabolism disorder, as there is a risk of serious symptoms such as seizures or respiratory distress. Gastrointestinal-related side effects such as abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal distension, and vomiting may occasionally occur, so the dosage should be reduced or temporarily discontinued if these symptoms appear. It may affect kidney function, potentially leading to an increase in BUN levels; therefore, if signs of impaired kidney function are observed, the dosage should be adjusted. Metabolic disorders that result in elevated blood ammonia levels can occur, so if such symptoms are observed, it is necessary to reduce the dosage or discontinue administration. Other reported side effects include elevated liver function test values, skin rashes, itching, swelling of the face or limbs, and fatigue. This medication is used in cirrhotic patients with hypoalbuminemia who have adequate food intake, and dietary guidance must be provided for patients with complications of diabetes or hepatic encephalopathy. It should not be administered to patients with severe hepatic encephalopathy or very high total bilirubin levels, or to patients with significantly reduced protein synthesis ability in the liver. This medication contains only branched-chain amino acids and does not provide all necessary amino acids, so patients must obtain sufficient protein and calories through diet. Caution is needed as increased BUN or blood ammonia levels may indicate overdose potential, and prolonged overdose may worsen nutritional status. If hypoalbuminemia does not improve after using for more than 2 months, alternative treatment methods should be considered. Elderly individuals may have reduced bodily functions, so careful administration is required as metabolic abnormalities such as increased blood ammonia may occur. The safety for pregnant or breastfeeding women has not been established, so it should be used only when the benefits outweigh the risks. Safety in pediatric patients has not been confirmed, and there is no experience with its use. Store out of reach of children and be careful when transferring to other containers as it may cause accidents or degrade quality.
