This drug is used to treat various gastrointestinal conditions, including gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It also helps in the prevention of Mendelson's syndrome before anesthesia and the treatment of postoperative ulcers. It is effective in treating gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This medication protects the gastric mucosa and reduces acid secretion, alleviating symptoms. Therefore, it is widely used for the treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

Usually, take 2 tablets orally twice a day in the morning and before bed regardless of meals. 1) Gastric and duodenal ulcers: Take 2 tablets twice a day or 4 tablets once before bed. Especially for duodenal ulcer patients, administering 4 tablets twice daily in the morning and before bed can achieve a higher treatment rate. 2) Gastroesophageal reflux disease: Take 2 tablets twice daily for 8 weeks or 4 tablets once before bed.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients undergoing dialysis or those with impaired kidney function. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients who have had allergic reactions to this drug or its components, those with a history of acute porphyria, patients who have undergone upper gastrointestinal surgery, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, premature infants, neonates, and patients who need to restrict potassium intake. Patients with impaired liver function, a history of hypersensitivity, elderly patients, those with a past history of renal impairment, and those taking NSAIDs should use this medication with caution. Particularly because it may mask symptoms of gastric cancer, patients with gastric ulcers or middle-aged patients who recently developed new dyspeptic symptoms should use it only after confirming malignancy. Patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers infected with Helicobacter pylori should receive bacterial eradication treatment alongside. Patients in critical care units, those with severe disease, patients with hypophosphatemia, and those who have difficulty swallowing should also be cautious when using this medication. During treatment, allergic reactions or shock symptoms may occur, so if symptoms are present, administration should be stopped immediately and healthcare personnel informed. Blood-related abnormal symptoms, such as rare leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, or aplastic anemia, may occur, so tests should be conducted if there are symptoms like fatigue, bleeding, or fever. Symptoms of liver dysfunction may also occur rarely, and if jaundice or hepatitis symptoms appear, use should be stopped immediately. Cardiac rhythm disturbances, vasculitis, digestive symptoms (nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, etc.), and neurological symptoms (dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, convulsions, etc.) have also been reported, requiring caution. Muscle aches, joint pain, skin rash, and hair loss are side effects that can also occur rarely. Long-term use of this medication is not recommended, and if there is no effect, it should be switched to another drug. In elderly patients or those with chronic illnesses, the risk of developing pneumonia may increase, requiring caution. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs, driving or operating dangerous machinery should be avoided. This medication can interact with other drugs, so patients taking anticoagulants, antibiotics, or anticonvulsants should consult with healthcare personnel. It is safer for pregnant or breastfeeding women to avoid using this medication, and it is also not recommended for children. In case of overdose, measures such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be needed, and in severe cases, blood dialysis may be necessary. Finally, this medication decreases gastric acid secretion, which can promote bacterial growth in the gastrointestinal tract, so regular check-ups, including eye examinations, are necessary during long-term use.
