This medication provides anesthesia to the surface of the skin, such as during injection needle insertion or wound areas, to reduce pain. It is also applied to the genital mucosa to assist in comfort before procedures such as condyloma removal. By providing surface anesthesia to wound areas like leg ulcers, it minimizes pain during washing or minor surgeries. It is used for various superficial anesthetic purposes to effectively alleviate patient discomfort.

Precautions

This medication is used as a local anesthetic and may carry the risk of causing a blood disorder called methemoglobinemia in certain patients. Particularly, patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, congenital or idiopathic methemoglobinemia, those with heart or lung damage, infants under 6 months, and patients exposed to oxidants are more sensitive to this condition and should be cautious. After using this medication, symptoms such as cyanosis or abnormal blood color may occur, and in severe cases, symptoms like seizures, coma, and arrhythmia can occur, requiring immediate treatment. This medication should not be used in areas with hypersensitivity or in wounds, mucous membranes, or areas affected by atopic dermatitis, and it should also not be administered to infants under 3 months or those under 12 months receiving drugs that induce methemoglobinemia, including premature infants. Patients with anemia, frailty, elderly patients, and those with liver disease should exercise extra caution when using this medication, as should those allergic to propylene glycol contained in this medication. Local reactions may occur upon application, including pallor, redness, swelling, itching, and initial burning sensations, and rarely allergic reactions or methemoglobinemia may occur. It is advised not to apply around the eyes due to irritation potential, and if it gets into the eyes, it should be washed out immediately with clean water. This medication typically has a low systemic toxicity risk at recommended dosages, but caution is advised for overdoses, as it may affect the central nervous system and heart. Additionally, the risk of methemoglobinemia may be increased when used in conjunction with certain medications (nitrates, some antineoplastics, antibiotics, antimalarials, etc.), necessitating caution with concomitant use. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, it should be used cautiously as this medication can pass into the placenta and breast milk. In particular, there is limited safety and effectiveness of this medication in children under 3 months; thus, it is advisable not to use it on genital mucosa. This medication can also be toxic to the inner ear, so it should not be used in the middle ear area, nor should it be applied to areas with open wounds. In case of overdose, neurological symptoms and methemoglobinemia may appear, necessitating appropriate treatment and careful observation of the patient for several hours. Lastly, prolonged high-dose use may increase the risk of carcinogenicity; therefore, it is best to avoid it whenever possible.
