This medication is used to treat ulcers that occur in the stomach and duodenum, and to alleviate the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease. It can also prevent the recurrence of gastroesophageal reflux disease as a long-term maintenance therapy. For patients with gastrointestinal ulcers due to Helicobacter pylori infection, it increases treatment efficacy when used in combination with antibiotics. It is also effective for diseases caused by excessive gastric acid secretion, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This medication aids in improving gastrointestinal diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

For gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers: 10 mg should be taken orally once daily, and depending on symptoms, up to 20 mg may be taken once daily. For erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease: administer 10 mg or 20 mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks. If symptoms do not improve, 10 mg or 20 mg may be given twice daily for 8 weeks. For alleviating symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease: 10 mg should be taken once daily for 4 weeks.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. It must not be used in patients with a history of allergy or hypersensitivity to this medication or its components, or to benzimidazole derivatives. It is also safe to avoid administering this medication to patients allergic to antibiotics such as amoxicillin or clarithromycin when treating Helicobacter pylori infection. Additionally, this medication is contraindicated in patients on specific heart-related medications, antiviral agents, and in pregnant or nursing women. Patients with impaired liver function or the elderly should use this medication cautiously, and those with a history of drug hypersensitivity should also take care. If allergic symptoms such as skin rash or itching appear while taking this medication, discontinue use immediately. Regular testing is required as changes in red blood cell or white blood cell counts may occur. Liver function abnormalities may appear; therefore, liver function tests should be conducted regularly, and side effects may occur in various systems including the heart, gastrointestinal tract, nervous system, respiratory tract, muscles, skin, eyes, and urinary tract. Prolonged use may increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures, and may lead to decreased serum magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia), thus periodic monitoring is essential. There may also be a slight increase in the risk of bacterial infections in the gastrointestinal tract due to acid suppression. Caution is needed as drowsiness may occur when driving or operating machinery. This medication may interact with other drugs, so consultation with a doctor is necessary when used in conjunction with medications like warfarin, methotrexate, antibiotics, and antiviral agents. Pregnant or nursing women should not use this medication, and the elderly should take it cautiously due to a higher risk of side effects from decreased liver function. There is insufficient safety data regarding the use of this medication in children. In cases of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so it is important to receive appropriate treatment based on symptoms. Tablets should be swallowed whole without chewing or crushing, and stored out of the reach of children. Long-term use of this medication may cause absorption issues of vitamin B12; therefore, periodic management is required during long-term treatment. Symptoms of erythema lupus may appear on the skin or systemically, and if such symptoms occur, immediate medical attention from a specialist is necessary. It may improve the accuracy of test results to temporarily discontinue this medication prior to examinations. Renal issues such as acute interstitial nephritis may occur during the use of this medication; if related symptoms arise, immediate discontinuation and medical attention are necessary.
