Treatment and prevention of recurrence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (including erosive reflux esophagitis), treatment and prevention of recurrence of Helicobacter pylori positive peptic ulcer, alleviation of upper gastrointestinal symptoms related to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of recurrence of gastroesophageal reflux disease and erosive esophagitis. It is also effective in the treatment of peptic ulcers associated with the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in combination with antibiotic therapy. It helps in the short-term treatment of upper gastrointestinal symptoms associated with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and in the treatment and prevention of gastric and duodenal ulcers. It is also used in the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and prevention and maintenance therapy for re-bleeding of gastric and duodenal ulcers. This medication is widely used for the relief and treatment of various gastrointestinal disorders.
This medication should be swallowed with liquid such as water and must not be chewed or crushed. 1. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) - Treatment of erosive reflux esophagitis: Administer 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks. If the esophagitis is unresolved or if symptoms persist, continue for an additional 4 weeks. - Long-term maintenance therapy to prevent recurrence in patients with esophagitis: Administer 20 mg once daily. - Symptomatic treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease without esophagitis: · Administer 20 mg once daily. If symptoms are not controlled after 4 weeks, additional consultation is needed. · Once symptoms are alleviated, control continued symptoms with 20 mg once daily. · For adults, administering 20 mg once daily as needed can be done. It is not recommended to administer as needed for continuous symptom control in patients at high risk of gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer due to NSAID use. 2) Combination therapy for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori Administer this drug 20 mg with 1 g amoxicillin and 500 mg clarithromycin, twice daily for 7 days. 3) Short-term therapy for upper gastrointestinal symptoms (pain, discomfort, burning sensation) related to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (both non-selective and selective COX-2) - Administer 20 mg once daily. If symptoms are not controlled after 4 weeks, additional medical consultation is needed. Clinical trials exceeding 4 weeks have not been conducted. 4) In patients who require continuous use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs - Treatment of gastric ulcers due to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: Administer 20 mg once daily. Treatment duration is 4 to 8 weeks. - Prevention of gastric and duodenal ulcers due to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: Administer 20 mg once daily. 5) Treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome The recommended starting dose is 40 mg twice daily. Subsequent doses should be tailored to the patient, and treatment should continue during clinical manifestations. Most patients can be stabilized on dosages of 80 to 160 mg daily. Doses over 80 mg should be divided into two doses. 6) Maintenance therapy after intravenous induction to prevent re-bleeding due to gastric or duodenal ulcers After intravenous induction to prevent re-bleeding due to gastric or duodenal ulcers, administer 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks.
Adolescents aged 12 years and older - Treatment of erosive reflux esophagitis: Administer 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks. - Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms without esophagitis: Administer 20 mg once daily.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. Patients allergic to this medication, its ingredients, or benzimidazole derivatives should not take it. Caution is needed when used with amoxicillin or clarithromycin for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori if allergic to those antibiotics. Also, patients taking certain heart-related medications or those with a history of myocardial infarction, as well as breastfeeding women, should not use this drug. This medication can present various adverse reactions, requiring caution during use. Symptoms like headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting are common, while rare instances of blood abnormalities, skin rash, myalgia, and liver function abnormalities have been reported. Notably, hypomagnesemia may occur, necessitating periodic blood tests during extended use. This drug suppresses gastric acid secretion, potentially increasing the risk of bacterial infections in the gastrointestinal tract. Hospitalized patients or those using the drug long-term should consult healthcare professionals if diarrhea persists. Long-term use may increase the risk of fractures; thus, patients at risk for osteoporosis should undergo appropriate monitoring, such as bone density tests. This medication may interact with other drugs, so patients must inform healthcare professionals of any other medications they are taking, particularly those affecting blood coagulation, antiviral drugs, and certain antibiotics. The safety of this medication during pregnancy has not been completely verified, so caution is advised when administered to pregnant women. It is also recommended that breastfeeding women avoid using this drug. In case of overdose, since there is no specific antidote, appropriate treatment according to symptoms must be administered, and it should be stored out of the reach of children.
