This medication helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it reduces the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with multiple risk factors and in patients with type 2 diabetes, and it also reduces the risk of vascular procedures and angina. For patients who already have heart disease, it lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and reduces the risk of hospitalization for congestive heart failure. Additionally, it is used for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels while increasing HDL cholesterol levels to improve blood lipid profiles. This drug is also useful as an adjunct therapy for patients with hyperlipidemia and dyslipidemia that is not manageable by diet alone. It is used to lower cholesterol levels in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years with familial hypercholesterolemia.
