Used for the treatment of osteoporosis which can occur in both postmenopausal women and men. This medication helps prevent fractures by increasing bone density. It is effective in maintaining healthy bones by primarily improving the condition when bones are weak.

How to take

Adult dose

As sodium alendronate, take 70 mg once weekly in the morning with a sufficient amount of water (170–230 mL) at least 30 minutes before eating food, drinking beverages, or taking other medications. After taking, do not lie down for at least 30 minutes and do not take it before bed or upon awakening. If you forget to take it on the scheduled day, take 70 mg the next morning.

Precautions

This medication can irritate the stomach and esophagus; therefore, those with esophageal diseases or upper gastrointestinal tract diseases such as gastritis, duodenitis, or ulcers should take caution when using it. Serious esophageal problems like esophagitis or esophageal ulcers can occur during treatment; if difficulty swallowing or symptoms like pain or heartburn occur, stop taking it immediately and consult a doctor. Always take with a sufficient amount of water (170–230 mL) and do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking. Do not eat before or after taking the medication. Patients with mental disorders or difficulties following the dosing instructions should take this medication under medical supervision. This medication should not be administered to individuals with certain esophageal abnormalities, severe renal failure, hypocalcemia, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or those with specific genetic disorders. Sufficient intake of calcium and vitamin D is required during treatment, and maintaining weight-bearing exercise and a healthy lifestyle is recommended. This medication may occasionally cause muscle, joint, or bone pain; seek medical advice if symptoms are severe. Rarer serious side effects such as osteonecrosis of the jaw can occur, so any dental treatment must be discussed with a healthcare professional. If taken with other medications, avoid taking calcium supplements or antacids within 30 minutes of taking this medication, and caution is required when taking it with aspirin as gastrointestinal side effects may increase.
