This medication is used to improve atherosclerotic symptoms in adult patients with ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, and peripheral arterial disease. Additionally, it reduces the risk of death from cardiovascular problems, myocardial infarction, and stroke in patients with acute coronary syndrome, particularly in those who have unstable angina or non-Q-wave myocardial infarction and receive medical treatment, percutaneous coronary intervention, or coronary artery bypass grafting. Furthermore, it is effective in lowering the risk of stroke and atherothrombosis, thromboembolism in adult patients with atrial fibrillation who have one or more vascular risk factors, are unsuitable for vitamin K antagonist therapy, and have a low risk of bleeding. In summary, this medication is used to reduce risks associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and improve symptoms.

Precautions

This medication helps prevent platelets from clumping together and facilitates smooth blood flow. Its effects may be reduced in individuals who have a genetic deficiency in the enzymes required to activate this medication. In such cases, the risk of heart attacks or cerebrovascular accidents may increase, and alternative treatments should be considered in consultation with a physician. Additionally, concomitant use of certain medications that activate these enzymes may increase the concentration of the active ingredient of this medication, raising the risk of bleeding; therefore, co-prescribing should be avoided. Patients with known allergies to this medication, those experiencing bleeding, individuals with severe liver damage, nursing mothers, and those with lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Patients with a high risk of bleeding, impaired liver or kidney function, those who have recently experienced a stroke, those with severe hypertension, elderly patients, and those with low body weight should use this medication cautiously. Notably, patients scheduled for surgery should discontinue this medication 5 to 7 days prior to the procedure and report any signs of bleeding to their physician immediately. This medication may increase the risk of bleeding when taken with aspirin, anticoagulants, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), certain antidepressants, and other medications that carry a risk of bleeding. During treatment, bleeding may take longer to stop, so if there is any bleeding or it persists, medical personnel should be notified immediately. Rarely, this medication can cause a decrease in certain blood cell counts, so tests may be necessary if symptoms of infection or unusual symptoms occur. During pregnancy, risks to the fetus have not been confirmed; however, due to the risk of bleeding, it should be used only when necessary. Nursing mothers should consult a physician regarding whether to discontinue breastfeeding as this medication can pass into breast milk. In cases of overdose, the risk of bleeding may increase, but there is currently no antidote for this medication; platelet transfusion can reverse its effects if necessary. To ensure safety for children, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container. This medication should also be administered with caution to elderly patients or those with compromised kidney function, and any new medications started during treatment or surgical plans should be communicated to healthcare providers.
