Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It particularly lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with multiple risk factors for coronary heart disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it is effective in reducing the risk of complications after angina and vascular procedures. In patients with hyperlipidemia, it is used to effectively lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels while increasing HDL cholesterol. This medication is particularly useful as an adjunct to diet for patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia and may also be used to treat pediatric patients according to certain criteria. Overall, it is used to improve heart and vascular health.
The recommended initial dose for hyperlipidemia is 10 mg of atorvastatin taken once daily; patients requiring greater reduction in LDL cholesterol may start with 20 mg or 40 mg taken once daily. This medication is dosed at 10 to 80 mg once daily. Lipid levels should be assessed 2 to 4 weeks after starting treatment and after dose adjustments to modify the dosage accordingly. The goal of treatment is to reduce LDL cholesterol levels.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (ages 10 to 17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg per day, and the recommended maximum dose is 20 mg per day. The dosage should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
This medication may cause muscle problems, so if symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness develop, it should be discontinued immediately and a doctor consulted. It can affect liver function, so it should not be used in patients with liver disease or elevated liver enzyme levels. Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers should not use this medication. It is not to be administered to children under 10 years of age. Alcoholics or individuals with a history of liver disease should use caution when taking this medication, and elderly patients should be careful due to an increased risk of muscle issues. This medication can interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform a physician or pharmacist about any other medications being taken. Particular caution is needed when taken in combination with certain antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and some antihypertensive drugs. Regular liver function tests and blood tests should be conducted while taking this medication, and any unusual symptoms should be reported immediately to healthcare professionals. This medication can cause serious muscle conditions such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis, so if symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, fatigue, or dark urine develop, immediate reporting to healthcare professionals is required. Grapefruit juice should be avoided while taking this medication as it may increase blood concentration and the risk of side effects. Women planning to become pregnant while taking this medication must use appropriate contraception. Particular caution is required for children, the elderly, and patients with renal impairment; dosing should be done according to a doctor’s instructions. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so treatment should be managed according to symptoms, and liver function and muscle status should be monitored routinely. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container to maintain its quality.
