This medication is used for hypertension and stable angina, as well as myocardial ischemia due to vascular spasms. Additionally, in patients with coronary artery disease confirmed by recent angiography who do not have heart failure or have normal cardiac output, it reduces the risk of hospitalization due to angina and also decreases the risks associated with coronary vascular reconstruction. It effectively acts on cardiovascular diseases to improve the health of patients.

How to take

Adult dose

For adults, the recommended dose is 5 mg of amlodipine once daily, taken orally, and may be increased up to a maximum of 10 mg per day depending on the patient's response. Adjustments can be made according to age and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. Firstly, individuals allergic to this drug or similar calcium channel blockers should not take it. Additionally, it should not be administered to breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver dysfunction, patients with severe aortic stenosis, or patients in a state of shock. This drug should be used cautiously in some patients. Special attention is required for patients with severe hypotension, renal failure requiring dialysis, elderly patients, and women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Various side effects may occur during the use of this medication. The most common side effects include flushing, fatigue, swelling, a sensation of palpitations, dizziness, headaches, drowsiness, abdominal pain, nausea, and weakness. Rarely, side effects may include hypotension, vasculitis, sensory disturbances, erectile dysfunction, gynecomastia, dry mouth, dyspepsia, weight changes, muscle pain, decreased blood cell counts, skin rash, and allergic reactions. Serious side effects such as myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, and chest pain have been rarely reported, so any abnormal symptoms should prompt immediate consultation with medical personnel. Patients with heart failure or liver impairment should exercise even greater caution when using this medication. The drug may be slowly eliminated from the body, so blood pressure may remain low even after discontinuation, necessitating caution when used in conjunction with other antihypertensive medications. This medication is not suitable for the treatment of acute angina, and it is unlikely to significantly impair driving or machinery operation ability. This drug can interact with various other medications, so if there are any concomitant medications, it is essential to inform the healthcare provider. In particular, taking it with grapefruit juice may enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect and is not recommended. Pregnant women should only use this medication in special circumstances, and nursing mothers should avoid taking it and discontinue breastfeeding. In pediatric patients aged 6 years and older, it has a blood pressure-lowering effect, but safety and efficacy have not been established in children under 6 years old. Elderly patients can be administered the standard dose, and tolerability is similar to that of younger individuals. In case of overdose, severe hypotension and cardiac issues may occur, so if overdose is suspected, immediate emergency treatment is required. This medication is known to have a low risk of cancer occurrence or genetic damage even when used long-term. Therefore, when taking this drug, it is important to follow the healthcare provider's instructions, attend to cautionary notes, and immediately consult if any abnormal symptoms arise.
