Improvement of hypertension and diabetic nephropathy
This medication is used to treat hypertension and is particularly effective in preventing renal complications in patients with type 2 diabetes who have kidney disease. It is used to manage hypertension and improve related kidney damage.
This medication can be taken regardless of meals, though it is recommended to take it at the same time each day. 1. Hypertension The recommended starting and maintenance dose is 50 mg orally once daily as Losartan Potassium. The maximum blood pressure-lowering effect appears 3 to 6 weeks after starting treatment. If the therapeutic effect is insufficient, the same dose may be divided into two administrations per day or increased to 100 mg once daily. 2. Diabetic kidney disease in patients with hypertension Commonly, the dose is 50 mg once daily.
Children and adolescents aged 6 years and older (1) Weight 20 kg to less than 50 kg: Administer 25 mg once daily, which may be increased to a maximum of 50 mg once daily. (2) Weight 50 kg or more
This medication can adversely affect renal development of the fetus during pregnancy, potentially causing serious harm to the fetus and newborn; therefore, it should not be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Patients with a history of allergic reactions to this medication, severe liver dysfunction, certain hereditary diseases, a history of angioedema, or specific kidney diseases should not take this medication. Elderly patients, those with reduced kidney function, patients at risk of hyperkalemia, and those with heart or vascular diseases should use this medication with extra caution and monitor their condition closely. During treatment, side effects such as dizziness, headache, muscle pain, and cough may occur, and in rare cases, serious adverse reactions such as angioedema, liver function abnormalities, kidney failure, and cardiac arrhythmias may develop; therefore, immediate consultation with a physician is necessary if such symptoms occur. This medication may cause dangerously high potassium levels in the blood when taken in combination with other antihypertensives, certain diuretics, or potassium supplements, thus concurrent use should always follow a doctor's guidance. Additionally, this medication may affect liver and kidney function, requiring careful consideration of dosing or administration for patients with liver or kidney disease, including regular blood tests and monitoring of physical status. Blood pressure may drop sharply during treatment; hence, if symptoms like dizziness or loss of consciousness occur, immediate notification to medical personnel is required, and patients undergoing hypertension treatment should regularly check their fluid and electrolyte status. If this medication is taken during pregnancy, it may affect fetal growth and kidney function, necessitating regular monitoring of fetal condition through ultrasound and close observation of the newborn for hypotension or impaired kidney function after delivery. This medication is not recommended for breastfeeding women, and it is advisable to discontinue breastfeeding while on this treatment. Moreover, this medication should not be used in children under 6 years because its safety and efficacy have not been established, and care should be taken when administering it to the elderly due to the increased possibility of side effects. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension and changes in heart rate may occur, requiring immediate treatment, and since this drug is not cleared by blood dialysis, prompt medical action is crucial. While taking this medication, do not take potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes without consulting a physician, and it is advisable to avoid grapefruit juice, as it may reduce the medication's effectiveness. Finally, store this medication out of reach of children and do not transfer it to another container to maintain safety and quality.
Urticaria, severe swelling (edema), chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor, angioedema (potentially causing airway obstruction from swelling of the larynx/glottis, swelling of the face/lips/pharynx/tongue), fever with severe rash, blisters, skin peeling, pain of oral/ocular mucosa, severe skin adverse reactions, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, asthma attacks, respiratory abnormalities accompanied by cough and fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
