Relief of symptoms of gastric ulcer and gastroesophageal reflux disease, and treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection
This medication is used to treat gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers. It is also effective in relieving symptoms of erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease. It can be utilized for long-term maintenance therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease, and is used in combination with antibiotics for the treatment of gastrointestinal ulcers infected with Helicobacter pylori. Additionally, it is used for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Overall, it helps broadly in treating various ulcer and inflammation-related diseases of the stomach and esophagus.
Gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer: 10 mg orally once daily; may administer 20 mg once daily based on symptoms. Erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease: administer 10 mg or 20 mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks. If not treated, may increase to a maximum of 20 mg twice daily. Symptom relief for gastroesophageal reflux disease: administer 10 mg once daily for 4 weeks.
This drug should not be used by patients who have allergies or have had hypersensitivity reactions to specific ingredients or benzimidazoles. Furthermore, it should not be combined with amoxicillin or macrolide antibiotics in patients allergic during Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy. Patients taking terfenadine, cisapride, pimodine, or astemizole, as well as those on atazanavir or rilpivirine, should not use this medication. It is also safest for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to take this medication. Caution is required in patients with liver dysfunction, the elderly, and those with a history of drug hypersensitivity. This medication may cause allergic reactions such as skin rash, hives, and itching, and if such symptoms occur, it should be discontinued immediately. Blood tests may show changes in red or white blood cell counts, liver function anomalies, necessitating regular examinations. Various side effects related to the heart, gastrointestinal symptoms, neurological symptoms, respiratory issues, muscle pain, skin problems, vision changes, and urinary abnormalities have been reported, and medical consultation is advisable if symptoms arise. Long-term use may increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures, so caution is warranted. Additionally, hypomagnesemia can rarely occur; therefore, magnesium levels should be regularly checked during long-term use or in conjunction with certain medications. This drug suppresses gastric acid secretion, which may slightly increase the risk of bacterial infection in the gastrointestinal tract; if symptoms such as diarrhea persist, a doctor should be consulted. Caution is needed as drowsiness may occur when driving or operating machinery. This drug may interact with other medications, so inform healthcare providers about any current medications. Particularly attentive use is necessary when combined with warfarin, methotrexate, antibiotics, and antiviral drugs. This medication should not be chewed or crushed and must be swallowed whole, and kept out of reach of children. During prolonged use, regular medical check-ups are important, and immediate consultation with healthcare providers is crucial if any unusual symptoms occur.
Hives, severe swelling (edema), chest tightness, difficulty breathing, fulminant hepatitis, liver dysfunction, jaundice, severe allergic reactions, severe skin reactions, toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell's syndrome), mucous membrane epidermal necrolysis (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), shortness of breath, asthma, interstitial pneumonia, sudden and severe headache, seizures, confusion, visual disturbances, paralysis, severe edema, urination abnormalities, acute interstitial nephritis
