This medication is used to treat essential hypertension. It also helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular mortality in patients over 55 years old who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease. It is particularly effective for patients who are intolerant to ACE inhibitors. This drug is also used in high-risk patients with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attacks, as well as diabetic patients with end-organ damage. It contributes to protecting cardiovascular health and lowering the risk of complications in these patients.

How to take

Adult dose

Essential Hypertension: Telmisartan at a dose of 40 mg once daily taken orally with water, and can be taken regardless of meals. 20 mg once daily may be effective for some patients, and if necessary, the dose may be increased up to 80 mg once daily. Dose increases show maximum blood pressure-lowering effect within 4 to 8 weeks after treatment initiation. Reduction of Cardiovascular Disease Risk: It is recommended to take 80 mg once daily with water.

Precautions

This drug can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. People who are allergic to this medication or its components, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver disease or bile duct obstruction, hereditary angioedema patients, diabetic patients or those with severe kidney impairment should not take this drug. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, patients with liver disease, and those with cardiac and renal issues should use this drug cautiously. During treatment, various side effects such as infections, blood abnormalities, allergic reactions, hyperkalemia, hypoglycemia, drowsiness, hypotension, respiratory distress, gastrointestinal disturbances, liver function abnormalities, skin rashes, muscle pain, or renal dysfunction may occur, so immediate consultation with a physician is advised if any unusual symptoms occur. Particular care is required as serious symptoms such as angioedema or severe allergic reactions, hyperkalemia, worsening renal function, shock, interstitial pneumonia, or rhabdomyolysis may appear. This drug requires regular monitoring of renal function and serum electrolyte levels, and actions should be taken immediately if symptoms of hypotension due to blood pressure-lowering effects occur. Interactions may occur when this drug is taken in combination with other antihypertensives, especially ACE inhibitors, aliskiren, lithium, diuretics, NSAIDs, etc., so consultation with a doctor and careful monitoring is necessary. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to take this medication, and if breastfeeding, they should either stop breastfeeding or consult a physician. Its safety and efficacy have not been established in children under 18 years of age, so it is not recommended. Elderly patients should take this medication carefully to avoid excessively low blood pressure and should be cautious of dizziness or fainting while driving or operating machinery. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, arrhythmia, dizziness, and renal failure may occur, necessitating immediate medical attention.

Hives, severe swelling (including angioedema), chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor, severe allergic reactions, severe rash with fever, blisters, peeling skin, pain in oral/eye mucosa, severe skin adverse reactions, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attack, respiratory distress with cough and fever, respiratory issues, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), extreme lethargy, liver abnormalities (jaundice).
