Improvement of symptoms and urinary flow in benign prostatic hyperplasia, reduction in the need for surgery
This medication helps improve symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. It reduces the enlarged prostate, improves urinary flow, and decreases the frequency of acute urinary retention. It also reduces the necessity for prostatic surgery, such as transurethral resection or prostatectomy. Therefore, this medication is effectively used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Finasteride is administered orally at a dose of 5 mg once daily, regardless of meals. Even if symptoms improve upon taking, at least 6 months of treatment is required.
This medication should not be used in children or women. Especially women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle broken tablets, as this medication can affect male fetuses. This medication can impact mental health; consult a healthcare professional immediately if symptoms of depression or mood changes occur. Patients with allergic reactions or certain hereditary lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Patients with liver dysfunction should take precautions when using this medication. Generally, this medication has mild and temporary side effects, but caution is needed as there may be adverse reactions related to sexual function. Cases of breast cancer have been reported in some patients with prolonged use, but a direct correlation with this medication has not yet been clearly established. This medication may increase the risk of prostate cancer, hence regular check-ups and PSA level monitoring are necessary. There are rarely interactions with other drugs, but it is advisable to consult with a doctor before taking it. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication, especially during pregnancy, as it may pose risks of malformation to male fetuses. Safety in children has not been established, so it should not be used. Elderly patients can use this medication as adults, but the therapeutic effect may not appear immediately. This medication can affect blood test results, so regular check-ups are necessary, and any unusual symptoms should be reported to healthcare personnel immediately. There is no specific treatment for overdose, but adhering to the recommended dosage is important. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original packaging.
