Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (including erosive reflux esophagitis), treatment and prevention of benign peptic ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori, alleviation of gastrointestinal symptoms related to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers, treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, prevention of rebleeding from gastric and duodenal ulcers, and maintenance therapy.
This medication is used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and erosive reflux esophagitis, as well as for long-term treatment to prevent recurrence in patients with esophagitis. It is used in combination therapy with antibiotics for the treatment and prevention of recurrence of peptic ulcers associated with Helicobacter pylori infection. Additionally, it is used short-term for the treatment of gastrointestinal pain or discomfort that may occur with the administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (including COX-2 inhibitors), and it is also effective in treating and preventing associated gastric and duodenal ulcers. It helps in maintenance therapy after prevention of rebleeding from Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Overall, it is widely used for the treatment of various symptoms and diseases related to gastrointestinal disorders.
This medication should be taken with liquids such as water and should not be chewed or crushed. 1) Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) erosive reflux esophagitis: 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks. If symptoms persist, an additional 4 weeks is required. Maintenance therapy to prevent recurrence in esophagitis patients: 20 mg once daily. Treatment of symptoms in gastroesophageal reflux disease without esophagitis: 20 mg once daily.
Adolescents aged 12 years and older 1) Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease with erosive reflux esophagitis: 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks. If symptoms persist, additional 4 weeks is necessary. Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease without esophagitis.
This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For instance, patients with an allergy or hypersensitivity to this medication or its ingredients, or benzimidazoles should not use it. Additionally, patients who have hypersensitivity to certain antibiotics used in combination during Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy should not take this medication. Caution is especially needed for those allergic to penicillin-based antibiotics or macrolide antibiotics. This medication is also not to be administered to patients with a specific history of heart disease or to nursing women. While taking this medication, various adverse reactions may occur. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting have been frequently reported, and rarely blood disorders, hypersensitivity reactions, skin rashes, and myalgia can occur. Long-term use may lead to electrolyte disturbances like hypomagnesemia; thus, regular testing is required. In severe cases, muscle-related conditions like rhabdomyolysis can occur, so immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is advised if muscle pain or weakness appears. This medication can mask symptoms of malignancy; therefore, if warning symptoms such as weight loss or recurrent vomiting are present, consult a doctor immediately. It is crucial to verify abnormalities through regular checks during long-term use. Additionally, this medication lowers gastric acidity, which may increase the risk of some bacterial infections; therefore, inform healthcare providers if diarrhea persists. This medication may interact with other drugs, especially when taken with antiviral agents, anticoagulants, or anticonvulsants; thus caution is needed. Changes in drug concentrations may increase the risk of side effects or decrease therapeutic effect, so it should be taken according to a doctor's instructions. Data on the use of this medication during pregnancy is limited; therefore, if pregnant, consult a doctor before deciding on its use. It is advisable not to use this medication while breastfeeding as it may pass into breast milk. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote; treatment should be symptomatic and include general management. Finally, this medication should be kept out of the reach of children, and it is important to store it in the original container to ensure safety and quality.
Hives, angioedema, anaphylaxis, shock, severe allergic reactions, rash with high fever, blisters, skin peeling, pain in oral/ocular mucosa, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, DRESS syndrome, liver failure, jaundice, encephalopathy, hepatic abnormalities, sudden and severe headache, thunderclap headache, seizures, confusion, visual disturbances, paralysis, severe neurological symptoms
