Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It specifically lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, is useful in reducing complications after vascular surgery and in treating chronic stable angina. It is also effective in reducing the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with diabetes who have cardiovascular risk factors. For patients with existing heart diseases, it helps to prevent recurrence and reduces the risk of hospitalization for congestive heart failure. Additionally, it is used to control cholesterol levels in patients with primary and familial hyperlipidemia, and to improve the lipid profile in pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Overall, it is effectively used to enhance cardiovascular health and reduce risk factors.
For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily, and for patients requiring greater reduction of LDL cholesterol, a starting dose of 20 mg or 40 mg once daily can be considered. The dosage is individualized within the range of 10 to 80 mg once daily, and lipid levels should be analyzed 2 to 4 weeks after starting or adjusting the dose. In patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dosing regimen is 10 to 80 mg once daily.
In pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10-17), the recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg daily. The dosage is to be adjusted according to individual treatment goals at intervals of at least 4 weeks.
This medication may cause muscle-related symptoms, so if muscle pain or weakness worsens, treatment should be stopped immediately and a doctor should be consulted. This medication may affect liver function, thus it should not be administered to patients with liver disease or high liver enzyme levels. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not take this medicine. This medication is not to be used in children under 10 years of age, and its use in children aged 10-17 should be done cautiously under doctor's discretion. Patients with a history of alcohol abuse, liver disease, and impaired kidney function should use this medication with increased caution. This medication may interact with certain drugs, so if taking other medications, one must inform their doctor or pharmacist. Particularly, caution is required when taken with certain antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, some antihypertensives, oral contraceptives, and grapefruit juice. During treatment, liver function and muscle condition should be regularly monitored for abnormal signs. This medication may cause serious muscle diseases such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis; if symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, fatigue, or fever occur, it is crucial to inform a doctor immediately. During treatment, unusual reactions such as malaise, fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, skin rash, or shortness of breath may occur, and immediate medical consultation should be sought if they appear. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container. In case of overdose, as there is no specific antidote, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention for treatment according to symptoms.
