Treatment of essential hypertension for blood pressure control
This medication is used to treat essential hypertension in cases where blood pressure is not adequately controlled by monotherapy with either olmesartan medoxomil or hydrochlorothiazide.
This medication is administered as one tablet once daily irrespective of meals. The dosage should be adjusted at intervals of 2 to 4 weeks based on the patient's blood pressure response. In elderly patients, it should be started at the lowest dose, considering renal function, cardiac function, comorbid diseases, and other medications during dosage adjustments. It is typically given to patients with mild to moderate renal impairment (creatinine clearance > 30 mL/min) but should not be administered to patients with severe renal impairment.
The safety and efficacy in children have not been established.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn when taken during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, therefore it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Particular caution is required in patients with decreased blood volume, severe heart failure, impaired renal or hepatic function, specific heart diseases, as well as in the elderly or infants. They should be closely monitored while taking this medication. This drug has blood pressure-lowering effects that may cause dizziness or hypotensive symptoms, so if symptoms occur, patients should lie down and rest immediately and may require fluid therapy if necessary. Additionally, this drug can cause electrolyte imbalances, so potassium, sodium, magnesium, and other levels in the blood should be regularly monitored, and appropriate actions should be taken if abnormalities are detected. This drug can interact with various medications; therefore, inform your healthcare provider if you are taking other medications, especially potassium supplements, lithium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and other antihypertensives. During therapy, if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, severe headache, eye pain, acute angle-closure glaucoma symptoms, severe dizziness, or edema occur, consult a physician immediately. Women who are breastfeeding should be aware that this medication can be passed into breast milk, which may carry a risk of adverse reactions in infants; discontinuation of breastfeeding or the drug is recommended. It is advisable not to use this medication in children as the safety and effectiveness have not been sufficiently established. In cases of overdose, symptoms may include hypotension, electrolyte imbalance, and dehydration, so it is essential to visit a medical facility promptly for appropriate treatment.
