View approved original text

This medication is used for surface anesthesia of the skin during needle insertion or superficial surgical procedures. It is also used to anesthetize the surface of the genital mucosa, for example, applied before the removal of condyloma. Additionally, it is effective for providing surface anesthesia before washing or superficial surgeries, such as the removal of fibrin or pus from leg ulcer areas. Using this medication for these purposes can effectively reduce pain and facilitate the procedural process. Therefore, it is used for surface anesthesia of the skin or mucosa.

Precautions

This medication is used as a local anesthetic and may cause a rare blood abnormality known as methemoglobinemia. Special caution is needed for patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency or congenital methemoglobinemia, patients with heart or lung diseases, infants under 6 months of age, and cases where it is used with oxidizing agents. When using this medication, it is important to carefully observe for symptoms of methemoglobinemia, such as a bluish appearance of the skin or abnormal changes in blood color. This medication should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to it, in areas where there are wounds, in patients with atopic dermatitis, in infants under 3 months, and in infants under 12 months taking specific medications. It should be used with caution in patients with anemia or liver disease, elderly patients, and frail patients, and caution is also needed for those allergic to propylene glycol, which is included in this medication. Local reactions such as skin paleness, redness, swelling, itching, early burning sensation, corneal irritation, petechiae, and purpura may occur when used locally, and in rare cases, allergic reactions like hives, angioedema, and bronchospasm may develop. It may cause irritation if it comes into contact with the eyes; therefore, it should not be applied around the eyes, and if it does enter the eyes, it must be washed out immediately with clean water. There may be drug interactions with this medication, so caution is particularly necessary when used with other drugs that may induce methemoglobinemia. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should definitely consult a specialist before use as this medication can cross the placenta and be secreted in breast milk. For children, especially infants under 3 months, only single applications have been studied, and it should not be used in infants under 12 months with drugs that may cause methemoglobinemia. In cases of overdose, neurological symptoms or serious side effects may occur, necessitating immediate treatment and close observation. Prolonged use of this medication in high doses should be avoided, and any abnormal symptoms during use should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately.
