Thioctic acid is used when the body requires increased amounts during intense physical labor. It is also helpful in treating Leigh syndrome, a rare neurological disease, and sensorineural hearing loss caused by toxics, particularly drugs like streptomycin or gentamicin. It is utilized in treating noise-induced sensorineural hearing loss occurring occupationally. If no effect is observed after about one month of administration, continued use should be avoided. Thus, thioctic acid is effectively used in the treatment of various sensorineural hearing losses and specific neurological diseases.
