This medication is used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, particularly for the treatment of erosive esophagitis and prevention of recurrence in patients with esophagitis. It is also helpful in treating and preventing recurrence of duodenal ulcers and peptic ulcers that are Helicobacter pylori positive. Additionally, it is used for relief of upper gastrointestinal symptoms associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, treatment of gastric ulcers, and for the prevention of gastric and duodenal ulcers. This drug is also used for the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and for maintenance therapy after prevention of rebleeding due to gastric or duodenal ulcers. It is effective for the treatment and prevention of various gastrointestinal diseases.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should not be administered to individuals with allergies to this drug or its components, or with a history of hypersensitivity to benzimidazole derivatives. Additionally, those who are allergic to amoxicillin or clarithromycin, when used in combination for eradication of Helicobacter pylori, should not use this drug. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting can commonly occur. Rarely, blood-related issues or severe allergic reactions, psychiatric symptoms, and skin rashes can also occur, and if any unusual symptoms arise, consultation with a healthcare professional should be sought immediately. Long-term use of this medication, especially for over one year, requires regular health check-ups and blood tests. This drug suppresses gastric acid secretion, which may slightly increase the risk of bacterial infections in the gastrointestinal tract. Patients at risk for osteoporosis or those with a high risk of fractures should be cautious about long-term use due to an increased risk of fractures. This drug can interact with other medications, so it is essential to inform healthcare providers of any concurrent use of specific antiviral drugs, anticoagulants, and anticonvulsants. Due to limited data on the safety of this drug during pregnancy, caution is advised if pregnant, and it is best to avoid use while breastfeeding. In case of overdose, as there is no specific antidote, it is essential to receive symptomatic treatment.
