Improvement of gastric ulcers and gastric mucosal lesions, and relief of excessive gastric acid symptoms
This medication is used in the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It also helps prevent Mendelson syndrome prior to anesthesia and aids in the treatment of post-operative ulcers. It is effective against gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is used to improve gastric mucosal lesions such as acute gastritis or exacerbations of chronic gastritis, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Additionally, it is effective in relieving heartburn and acid regurgitation due to excessive gastric acid. Overall, it is used to improve symptoms related to gastric and esophageal diseases.
As ranitidine, the usual adult dosage is 150 mg orally twice daily, in the morning and at bedtime. 1) For gastric and duodenal ulcers: 150 mg orally twice daily, or 300 mg orally once daily at bedtime. Especially for duodenal ulcer patients, 300 mg orally twice daily in the morning and at bedtime may be administered. 2) For gastroesophageal reflux disease: 150 mg orally twice daily for 8 weeks.
For children aged 8 to 18 years, a single dose of 150 mg (2 mg per kg of body weight) can be administered up to twice a day.
This medication should not be used in patients who have had allergic reactions to this drug or any of its components. Additionally, it should be avoided in patients with a history of a rare blood disorder known as acute porphyria, as it may worsen symptoms. Patients with impaired renal function may have increased blood concentration due to poor excretion of the drug, and therefore may require a reduced dose or an increased dosing interval. Patients with hepatic impairment also require caution, and those with a history of drug allergies, the elderly, and patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should use it carefully. In particular, since it may mask symptoms of gastric cancer, it should be used only after confirmation of cancer status in patients with gastric ulcers or in middle-aged individuals with newly appeared dyspeptic symptoms. Patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers infected with Helicobacter pylori should also undergo treatment to eradicate the bacteria. While taking this medication, rare but serious adverse events such as allergic reactions, blood abnormalities, liver dysfunction, cardiac rhythm issues, digestive symptoms, and neurological abnormalities may occur, so any unusual symptoms should be reported to a doctor immediately. During treatment, the patient's condition should be continuously monitored, using only the minimum effective dose. If ineffective, alternative treatments should be considered. The elderly, as well as those with chronic pulmonary illnesses, diabetes, and weakened immune systems, may have a higher risk of pneumonia and should be monitored closely. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs after taking this medication, driving or operating dangerous machinery should be avoided. There may be interactions with other medications, especially if taking anticoagulants or specific drugs, so consultation with a doctor and blood tests to monitor the condition is necessary. When taken with the medication sucralfate, it is recommended to space the doses by two hours to prevent reduced absorption of this drug. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as those who are breastfeeding, should carefully weigh the benefits and risks when using this medication. Safety in pediatric populations has not been sufficiently established, thus caution is necessary. The elderly may have decreased renal function, requiring dosage adjustments and extended intervals. When using this medication, some tests may yield false positive results, necessitating adjustments to testing methods. No significant problems have been reported with overdose, but appropriate treatment such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary, and blood dialysis may be used to remove the drug if needed. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container is not advisable for quality and safety reasons. Caution is required with long-term use, as decreased gastric acid secretion may lead to bacterial overgrowth in the stomach; animal studies have reported effects on ocular tissues, so ocular examinations may be necessary with long-term use.
