Treatment of obesity (weight loss and maintenance) and prevention of weight regain
This medication is recommended for obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or BMI of 27 or higher with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia. It helps in weight loss when combined with a low-calorie diet and is effective in maintaining weight. It is also used to reduce the risk of regaining weight. This medication can assist in improving health problems related to obesity.
○ Adults The recommended dose is 120mg of orlistat per dose, 3 times daily by mouth, taken with a fat-containing meal or within 1 hour after a meal. Patients should continue to follow a nutritionally balanced, mildly hypocaloric diet in which approximately 30% of calories are from fat. Daily intake of fat, carbohydrates, and protein should be evenly distributed among three meals. This medicine may be omitted if a meal is skipped or contains no fat. As this medicine may reduce the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene, patients are advised to take a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins to ensure adequate nutrition. The vitamin supplement should be taken at least 2 hours before this medicine or at least 2 hours after taking it, such as at bedtime. Taking more than 120mg per dose, 3 times daily does not increase the efficacy of this medicine. Based on measurements of fecal fat, the effect of this medicine appears approximately 24 ∼ 48 hours after taking it. After treatment is discontinued, fecal fat content generally returns to pretreatment levels within 48 ∼ 72 hours. The efficacy and safety of this medicine for periods exceeding 4 years have not been evaluated. ○ Studies have not been conducted in patients with hepatic and/or renal impairment or in older adults.
Children under 12 years of age: Studies have not been conducted.
This medication should not be used in patients with chronic malabsorption syndrome or those with biliary obstruction. Additionally, individuals allergic to this medication or its ingredients, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers should not take this medication. If there are any signs of liver damage, such as changes in liver function, discontinue use immediately and inform your doctor. Caution is advised for those with hyperoxaluria or calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis. This medication may cause primarily gastrointestinal side effects, such as abdominal distension, constipation, oily stools, and fecal incontinence. These side effects are usually mild and tend to decrease over time. If symptoms indicating liver dysfunction, such as decreased appetite, itching, jaundice, changes in urine color, or abdominal pain occur while using this medication, consult a doctor immediately. Although this medication has weight loss effects, excessive weight loss may increase the risk of gallstones, so caution is needed. This medication may reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, K) and beta-carotene, so it is advisable to take vitamin supplements. Vitamin supplements should be taken at least 2 hours before or after taking this medication. This medication may interact with specific drugs, so if you are taking other medications, consult with your doctor or pharmacist. Particularly, caution must be taken when being used concurrently with cyclosporine, as it may lower cyclosporine levels. It is safest for pregnant or nursing women not to take this medication. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been confirmed for children under 12 years old. There is insufficient clinical data regarding its use in the elderly, so caution is warranted. If an overdose occurs, no specific treatment is available, but patients should be monitored for unusual symptoms for 24 hours. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored away from light and moisture.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication is sensitive to air, light, and moisture, so it should be stored in a tightly sealed container. It should be kept in a cool place at a temperature below 25 degrees Celsius to maintain its effectiveness.
