This medication is used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones, making them more susceptible to fractures. Taking this medication helps increase bone strength and reduce the risk of fractures, thereby maintaining healthy bones and improving quality of life.

How to take

Adult dose

Take 1 tablet once a month regularly on the same day in the morning at least 1 hour before consuming food, beverages (except water), or other oral medications or dietary supplements (including calcium). - Swallow with a sufficient amount (180–240 mL) of water while standing or sitting upright, and do not lie down for 60 minutes after taking. - Mineral waters may decrease absorption.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, those who are allergic to this medication or its ingredients, have untreated hypocalcemia, cannot sit upright or stand for at least 60 minutes, have esophageal dysfunction leading to difficulty swallowing food, or have lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should not take this medication. Patients with severe renal impairment should use this medication cautiously. While taking this medication, side effects such as dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, muscle pain, joint pain, rash may occur. Some patients may experience influenza-like symptoms or gastrointestinal issues such as esophagitis and esophageal ulcers, so caution is advised. Since this medication can irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, patients with upper gastrointestinal diseases such as gastritis, esophagitis, or ulcers must consult a doctor before taking it. If swallowing difficulty or chest pain occurs during treatment, stop taking the medication immediately and inform a healthcare professional. Additionally, taking this medication with calcium, milk, or antacids can interfere with absorption, so it is important not to eat food or take other medications for at least 1 hour after taking this medication. There have been reports of rare side effects such as osteonecrosis of the jaw or external auditory canal necrosis, so patients with cancer or poor oral hygiene should ideally receive a dental check-up before taking this medication. It is recommended to avoid dental treatment while on this medication. While treating osteoporosis, severe bone, joint, or muscle pain may occur, and should these symptoms arise, patients should consult with their healthcare provider. Additionally, atypical fractures of the femur or other bones can occur, so if there is pain in the thigh or groin, immediate evaluation is necessary. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should refrain from using this medication. Elderly patients do not require dosage adjustment, but safety and efficacy have not been established in children under 18 years of age. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal disturbances and hypocalcemia may occur, so caution is needed to avoid overdose. If an overdose is suspected, contact a healthcare professional immediately for appropriate action. Finally, this medication should be kept out of reach of children, and unused medications should be disposed of properly to prevent environmental harm.
