Reduced risk of myocardial infraction and stroke, improved hypercholesterolemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It is particularly effective in reducing the risk for adult patients at high risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, as well as for patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it decreases the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular interventions, and angina in patients with existing heart disease, and it also lowers the risk of hospitalization due to congestive heart failure. It is used as an adjunct to a diet to lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels and raise HDL cholesterol levels in patients with hyperlipidemia. It is beneficial for certain patients with hypercholesterolemia unresponsive to diet, as well as for pediatric patients with a family history or other risk factors. Therefore, this medication is used to improve cardiovascular health and to treat hyperlipidemia.
Administer 10 to 80 mg once daily, at any time of day, regardless of meals. The recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily; for patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol, it may be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. Dosage should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient response, and lipid levels should be analyzed for adjustment after 2 to 4 weeks. The target of treatment is to lower LDL cholesterol levels.
For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17), the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily, and the maximum recommended dose is 20 mg daily. The dosage may be adjusted according to the treatment goals over an interval of more than 4 weeks.
