This medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It particularly lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with risk factors for coronary artery disease (age, smoking, hypertension, low HDL cholesterol, etc.) and in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is also effective in reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications such as myocardial infarction, stroke, need for vascular interventions, angina, and hospitalization for congestive heart failure. It is applicable for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, helping to decrease total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels while increasing HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or dyslipidemia. It is especially used in cases of familial hypercholesterolemia in children when dietary modifications do not respond. This medication is used for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and improvement of hyperlipidemia.
