View approved original text

This medication helps improve symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. It reduces the enlarged prostatic tissue to facilitate urinary flow and decreases the frequency of acute urinary retention. Furthermore, using this medication can reduce the necessity for prostate-related surgeries, such as transurethral resection of the prostate or prostatectomy. Overall, it is used to improve prostatic health and enhance the quality of life for patients.

How to take

Adult dose

Administer 5 mg of finasteride orally once daily regardless of meals. Even if symptoms improve upon taking, treatment for at least 6 months is necessary.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to children and women. Especially, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid contact with broken pieces of this medication due to potential risks to male fetuses from its active ingredient. During treatment, mood changes such as feelings of depression or, in severe cases, suicidal thoughts may occur, so if such symptoms arise, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is necessary. It should not be taken by individuals with hypersensitivity to this drug or those with lactose intolerance, soybean oil allergy, or allergies to beans or peanuts. Patients with impaired liver function or metabolic disorders should use this medication with caution, especially if they have conditions like hyperlipidemia, diabetic dyslipidemia, or pancreatitis. In general, this medication is well-tolerated, but sexual function-related adverse reactions may occur. For example, erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and ejaculation disorders have been reported, and some patients have experienced gynecomastia, breast pain, and skin rashes. Long-term use has been associated with cases of male breast cancer, but a direct connection with this medication has not been established. This medication may slightly increase the risk of prostate cancer, so regular prostate examinations are important, especially for men over the age of 55. This medication has relatively few interactions with other drugs, but if other medications are being taken, it is important to inform the healthcare provider. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication, and women who may become pregnant should take precautions to avoid exposure to broken pieces of this medication. The safety in children has not been established, so it should not be given to them. Elderly patients can use it without special dosage adjustments, but their condition should be monitored closely. This medication lowers prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, so caution is needed when interpreting PSA test results. There are no specific antidotes for overdose, but it is crucial to take the recommended dosage. Finally, keep this medication out of reach of children and do not transfer it to other containers.
