This medication is used to prevent and treat Vitamin D deficiency in elderly individuals, adolescents, and adults. It improves bone health issues caused by Vitamin D deficiency and helps maintain overall health.

How it is given

Adult administration

The dosage should be adjusted based on the blood level of 25-hydroxy vitamin D as prescribed by a physician. 200,000 IU of cholecalciferol is administered intramuscularly. Elderly patients are administered 100,000 IU of cholecalciferol intramuscularly. Annual dosage should not exceed 600,000 IU.

Child administration

Adolescents receive 200,000 IU of cholecalciferol intramuscularly. The treatment efficacy and tolerance should be reviewed within 6 months to determine whether to re-administer.

Precautions

This medication contains Vitamin D, and excessive dosing should be avoided. When taking fortified foods or other medications that contain Vitamin D, it is important to check the total Vitamin D content. Blood calcium levels should be periodically tested, and if calcium levels become too high, medication should be discontinued. Special caution is advised for pediatric and elderly patients regarding contamination with glass fragments during usage. This medication should not be used in patients with certain diseases or conditions. For instance, patients with hypercalcemia or a history of kidney stones, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women, should not take this medication. Side effects may include headaches, fatigue, muscle pain, digestive disorders, dehydration, hypertension, and kidney issues. If these symptoms occur, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. When administering to patients with Vitamin D deficiency, blood Vitamin D levels should be regularly monitored, and patients with impaired kidney function should undergo periodic kidney function tests. Interactions with other medications may occur, so caution is required when taken with anticonvulsants, diuretics, antacids, etc. Especially if blood calcium levels rise, there may be a risk of cardiac arrhythmia which could necessitate an electrocardiogram. Pregnant women should not take this medication, and safety and efficacy have not been established for children under the age of 12. In cases of overdose, medication should be stopped immediately, calcium intake should be reduced, fluid intake should be increased, and measures to promote diuresis should be undertaken. This medication should not be mixed with other drugs and should be used promptly after opening; any remaining medication should be discarded. Store in a container that prevents light exposure and maintain a temperature between 1 degree and 25 degrees Celsius.
