Precautions

This medication can rarely cause generalized tonic-clonic seizures in patients without a history of seizures, so particular caution should be taken for patients with electrolyte abnormalities or those taking medications that pose a high risk for electrolyte abnormalities. This medication should not be used in cases of bowel obstruction, gastrointestinal obstruction, perforation, toxic colitis, or toxic megacolon, and should be used with caution in patients with severe ulcerative colitis. Patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or its components, suspected gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation, dehydration or severe heart failure, patients with active cancer, gastroparesis, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, patients with coma, and children under 18 years of age should not be administered this drug. Caution is advised for patients with bowel strictures, severe constipation, elderly patients, frail patients, those with impaired vomiting reflex or altered consciousness, patients at high risk for pulmonary aspiration, patients with severe renal impairment, those with acute severe inflammatory diseases, patients with dysphagia, those with severe abdominal distension or pain, and patients with severe ulcerative colitis. Various adverse reactions have been reported with this medication, including hunger, electrolyte abnormalities, sleep disturbances, dizziness, headache, abdominal pain, nausea, abdominal distension, vomiting, dyspepsia, lethargy, thirst, tremors, liver dysfunction, etc. Particularly in the elderly, caution is necessary as bleeding due to gastric mucosal damage, esophageal perforation, cardiac arrest, and acute pulmonary edema may occur. Prior to administration, the bowel status of the patient should be verified, and during administration, bowel movements should be observed for appropriateness. Bowel activity usually begins about one hour after administration, and if abdominal distension or pain occurs, the rate of administration should be adjusted or discontinued, and examination should be sought if necessary. If symptoms of fluid or electrolyte abnormalities appear, blood tests should be performed to check the status and appropriate treatment should be instituted. For patients at risk of cardiac disease or electrolyte imbalance, electrocardiograms and renal function tests should be conducted, particularly in those at high risk for arrhythmias. This medication can cause diarrhea, so adequate fluid intake is necessary. The risk of mucosal ulceration or ischemic colitis increases when used with irritant laxatives, so it is advisable not to use them together. Before administration, care must be taken as the absorption of medications taken within one hour prior may be inhibited, particularly for those with a narrow therapeutic range or short half-life. Pregnant or nursing women should only use this medication when the diagnostic benefits outweigh the risks, and safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established, so it should not be administered to them. The elderly may be more sensitive to this medication, increasing the risk of side effects, so use with caution. Overdose may cause dehydration, decreased blood volume, and electrolyte abnormalities, so careful monitoring and treatment are required in cases of overdose. This medication should be compounded without adding other components or fragrances, and should be dissolved in water and taken immediately; any solution not used within 24 hours should be discarded. Store this medication in a tightly sealed container to prevent exposure to air or moisture. Additionally, it should be stored at a safe temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius.
