Reduction of risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, as well as improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medicine helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It is used particularly to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, the need for vascular surgery, and angina, helping to maintain stable heart conditions. It also lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hyperlipidemia and dyslipidemia, improving vascular health. It effectively helps control cholesterol levels in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 who have a family history or high-risk factors. This drug is used as an adjunct to dietary therapy to improve various risk factors associated with heart diseases.
For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily. For patients requiring greater LDL-cholesterol reduction, treatment may be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. Typically, this drug is administered in a dosage range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. Lipid levels should be analyzed within 2 to 4 weeks after initiation and adjustment of dose to fine-tune the dose. Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10-17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily. The recommended maximum dose is 20 mg once daily, and there is no clinical data regarding doses higher than 20 mg in this patient population.
This drug may cause muscle-related symptoms, so treatment should be stopped immediately and a physician consulted if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs. This drug may affect liver function, hence it should not be taken by individuals with liver disease or with abnormally high liver function test results. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding should not take this drug, and fertile women must use appropriate contraception while taking it. Children, especially those under 10 years of age, should not take this drug, and the long-term safety in adolescents under 18 has not been thoroughly studied. Patients with a history of alcohol addiction or liver disease should exercise extra caution when taking this drug, and regular liver function tests are required. This drug may increase the risk of muscle damage when taken with certain medications, so patients taking other medications must inform their doctor or pharmacist. If symptoms such as malaise, fever, myalgia, or muscle weakness occur during treatment, immediate medical attention is advised. Caution should be exercised as taking this drug with grapefruit juice may increase blood drug concentrations; therefore, it is advisable to avoid grapefruit juice consumption. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function are at a higher risk of myopathy and should take caution during use; regular monitoring is recommended. In cases of overdose, since there is no specific antidote, treatment should be symptomatic, with testing for liver function and muscle damage.
