Summary

Main use
Reduction of risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hyperlipidemia
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily, and for patients requiring more LDL-cholesterol reduction, it can be initiated at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered in a dosage range of 10 – 80 mg once daily, and the dosage should be adjusted based on treatment goals and patient characteristics within 2-4 weeks. The treatment goal is to lower LDL-cholesterol levels, so it is recommended to monitor LDL-cholesterol levels at the start of treatment and during treatment response evaluations. If LDL-cholesterol levels cannot be measured, total cholesterol levels can be used to monitor treatment response. For homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dose is 10 – 80 mg once daily, either in conjunction with other lipid-lowering treatments (e.g., LDL apheresis) or in cases where other lipid-lowering treatments are not viable.
Child dose
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10-17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, and the recommended maximum dose is 20 mg once daily. The dosage should be adjusted every 4 weeks or more.

This medication is used for adults and pediatric patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease. It helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, complications after vascular surgeries, angina, and congestive heart failure related to coronary artery disease. Additionally, it is used as an adjunct to diet in patients with hyperlipidemia to lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apo-B protein, and triglycerides while increasing HDL-cholesterol levels. This effect is particularly prominent in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia or type 2 diabetes. In children, it is effective for patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia with LDL-cholesterol levels above certain criteria. In summary, this medication is used for reducing cardiovascular disease risk and managing dyslipidemia.

How to take
