This medication is primarily used in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia when it is difficult to control through diet and exercise alone. It is also effective as an adjunct to diet and lipid-lowering therapy in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels and slows the progression of atherosclerosis. In pediatric patients, it can be used as an adjunct to diet in those who meet specific criteria for hypercholesterolemia. Additionally, it helps treat primary dysbetalipoproteinemia and has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Particularly in high-risk elderly populations, it improves cardiovascular health by reducing the risks associated with stroke, myocardial infarction, and arterial revascularization.
