This medication helps manage blood sugar within the normal range, improving diabetes symptoms and contributing to the prevention of complications.

How to take

Adult dose

The initial dose is 500mg of Metformin Hydrochloride extended release tablet once daily with dinner. After one week, blood sugar levels should be measured to adjust the dose, with a maximum dose of 2000mg per day. When increasing the dose, it should be increased by 500mg weekly, and a maximum of 2000mg can be taken with dinner. If blood sugar is not controlled with the maximum daily dose of 2000mg, consider 1000mg twice a day with meals.

Precautions

This medication can rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a condition where the concentration of lactate in the blood becomes abnormally high, leading to harmful effects on the body, which can be life-threatening if not treated. Caution is necessary when using this medication with insulin or other diabetes treatments, as hypoglycemia can occur. Hypoglycemia can result in low blood sugar levels leading to dizziness, cold sweat, and even loss of consciousness. This medication should not be used in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, dehydration, serious infections, or acute illnesses that can affect renal function, such as acute myocardial infarction. In specific patient groups, such as those with acute or unstable heart failure, those due to undergo tests with iodinated contrast agents, patients allergic to this medication's components, and type 1 diabetes patients, use of this medication is contraindicated. In the case of surgery, especially before and after surgery when food and fluid intake is restricted, this medication should be temporarily discontinued and resumed only after confirming normal kidney function. This medication may cause gastrointestinal disturbances, particularly during the initial phase of treatment, where nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are common. These symptoms usually resolve over time, but if severe, consulting a physician is necessary. Regular renal function tests should be performed to ensure this medication does not accumulate in the body, and especially in the elderly or patients with slightly impaired renal function, more frequent testing is required. Alcohol may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, a side effect of this medication, so excessive drinking should be avoided while taking it. Vitamin B12 deficiency may occur; therefore, regular blood tests are recommended to monitor this. During pregnancy, this medication may cross the placenta to the fetus; thus, patients who are planning to become pregnant or are pregnant should consult a doctor before use. This medication is not recommended for children under 17 years of age, and dosage adjustments should be made for the elderly based on kidney function. In case of overdose, this medication can be removed through dialysis; therefore, if overdose is suspected, immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication may interact with other drugs; therefore, patients should inform their doctor or pharmacist of any other medications they are taking. This medication should be swallowed whole without chewing or crushing, and it is normal for the tablet coating to be excreted in the stool. Regular blood sugar testing and renal function monitoring should be performed during medication use to continuously check for treatment effectiveness and side effects.
