View approved original text

This medication is used for patients with diabetes who are following dietary and exercise therapy but still have insufficient blood sugar control. It is also used as an additional therapy for patients already taking oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin but lacking effectiveness, to improve postprandial hyperglycemia. It assists in managing the patient's blood sugar and effectively controlling the rise in blood sugar after meals, thereby reducing the risk of complications. Therefore, this medication plays an important role in diabetes management and improves the patient's blood sugar control.

How to take

Adult dose

Because efficacy and tolerability vary among patients, the physician must determine the dose according to the patient's condition. The usual dosage is as follows. Adults generally take 0.2mg of voglibose orally per dose 3 times daily before each meal. If the effect is insufficient, the dose per administration may be increased to 0.3mg while carefully monitoring the patient's progress.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to patients in serious conditions such as severe ketoacidosis or diabetic coma. It also should not be used in patients with severe infections, before and after surgeries, or in patients with severe trauma, and should not be administered to those who are allergic to any component of this medication. As it contains lactose, it should not be given to patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic disorders. Caution is required for patients with digestive disorders or excessive intestinal gas that worsens symptoms, severely impaired liver or kidney function, and elderly patients. When taken with other hypoglycemic agents, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, so it is important to start at a lower dose. When taking this medication, hypoglycemic symptoms may occur; it is advisable to consume glucose instead of sugar if symptoms occur. Abdominal distension or gas may occur, and in rare cases, hepatic dysfunction or jaundice may occur, as well as altered consciousness in severe cirrhosis, so symptoms should be monitored closely. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, etc., as well as skin rash or itching, elevated liver enzymes, headaches, dizziness, and various side effects can occur. If any of these symptoms appear, immediate consultation with a physician should be sought to determine whether to discontinue the medication. This medication is only for use in patients diagnosed with diabetes and should be used while periodically checking blood sugar levels in conjunction with diet and exercise. If blood sugar control is insufficient, consideration should be given to changing treatment. This medication interferes with the breakdown of sugar, so in cases of hypoglycemia, glucose should be consumed instead of sugar, or in severe cases, intravenous glucose or glucagon injections should be administered in a hospital. When used with other hypoglycemic agents, sufficient education should be provided on hypoglycemic symptoms and countermeasures. This medication may interact with certain drugs, so if there are other medications being taken, it is essential to inform the physician. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the risks and benefits before using this medication, and breastfeeding women should avoid using it if possible. Safety in children has not been established, so it is advisable not to use it. Elderly patients may have diminished bodily functions, so treatment should begin with a lower dose, and blood sugar and gastrointestinal symptoms should be monitored closely. In patients with severe liver dysfunction, hypoglycemia may occur, so particular caution is required. This medication should be used strictly according to a physician's instructions, and immediate consultation with medical personnel should be sought if any abnormal signs appear.
