View approved original text

This medication helps improve symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. It alleviates the pressure on the urethra caused by an enlarged prostate, facilitating smoother urine flow. Additionally, it reduces the frequency of acute urinary retention, preventing sudden urinary disorders. Consequently, it can lower the necessity for invasive treatments such as prostatectomy or transurethral resection. Overall, it effectively improves the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

How to take

Adult dose

As Finasteride, take 5 mg orally once daily, with or without food. Treatment for at least 6 months is necessary, even if symptoms improve during administration.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in children or women. Particularly, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid handling broken or crushed tablets as this medication can harm male fetuses. During treatment, symptoms of depression or mood changes may occur, so if such symptoms arise, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is necessary. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or with certain genetic issues such as lactose intolerance should not use it. Patients with liver dysfunction should use this medication cautiously. While this drug is generally safe, side effects such as sexual dysfunction, breast enlargement or pain, and skin rashes may occur. Some patients may experience reduced ejaculate volume, erectile dysfunction, or decreased libido. Long-term use has been reported to increase the possibility of male breast cancer, although a direct association is not yet clear. This medication may slightly increase the risk of specific high-grade prostate cancer, so special caution is needed, especially in men over 55 years old. No special interactions with other drugs are known, and it is generally safe to use with most common medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication, and particularly pregnant women should avoid exposure to it. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, so it should not be used in this population. Elderly patients can use it in the same manner as the general adult population, and no specific dosage adjustment is necessary. This medication can reduce prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, so this should be considered when interpreting PSA test results. There is no specific treatment for overdose, but care should be taken to avoid exceeding the usual dosage. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and not transferred to another container.
