Reduction of risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hypercholesterolemia, treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with various cardiovascular disease risk factors and patients with type 2 diabetes. It also effectively reduces the risk of recurrence after vascular interventions, as well as hospitalization due to chronic stable angina and congestive heart failure. In patients with hyperlipidemia, it is used in conjunction with dietary changes to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It is particularly effective for patients with familial hypercholesterolemia or difficult-to-treat dyslipidemia. For young pediatric patients with high cardiovascular disease risk factors or cholesterol levels above the threshold, it also serves to supplement dietary therapy. Thus, it is used for the reduction of cardiovascular disease risk and improvement of hyperlipidemia.
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended starting dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once a day. Patients requiring greater LDL cholesterol reduction may start with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily (in cases requiring a reduction of 45% or more in LDL cholesterol). This medication is administered in a dosage range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. The starting and maintenance doses should be tailored to the patient's characteristics based on treatment objectives and responses.
The recommended starting dose for pediatric patients (10 to 17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, and the maximum dose is 20 mg once daily. The dosing should be adjusted appropriately according to therapeutic goals.
This medication may cause muscle issues; if you experience muscle pain or weakness, stop using it immediately and consult your doctor. This medication should not be used in patients with certain liver diseases or severely impaired liver function. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication and should use adequate contraception while taking it. This medication is not administered to children, especially those under 10 years of age. Alcoholics or those with a history of liver disease should use this medication cautiously and should undergo regular liver function tests. This medication may increase specific enzyme levels in the blood, thus periodic testing is necessary during treatment. When taking this medication with others, it may increase the risk of side effects due to interactions, so all medications must be disclosed to the doctor. Special caution is required when used with certain antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and specific cardiovascular medications. This medication should not be taken with grapefruit juice, as it may increase blood concentration. If symptoms such as muscle pain, fatigue, or fever appear during treatment, inform your doctor immediately, and if necessary, a blood test should be conducted to verify muscle damage. This medication is not recommended for women who are breastfeeding; hence it should be avoided during breastfeeding. Elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function may have a higher risk of side effects, thus dosage adjustment and monitoring are necessary. In cases of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so treatment should be based on symptoms, and liver function and muscle enzyme tests should be performed regularly. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and store it in its original container.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
