This medication is used to prevent and treat vitamin B6 deficiency. It is particularly effective when vitamin B6 levels are decreased due to the administration of drugs such as isoniazid and hydralazine. It is also used when there is an increased demand for vitamin B6 due to wasting diseases, during pregnancy and lactation, or when taking estrogen preparations. It is helpful in treating vitamin B6 dependency or related anemia. Furthermore, when symptoms such as stomatitis, eczema, and peripheral neuropathy are associated with vitamin B6 deficiency or metabolic disorders, therapeutic effects can be expected through this medication. Thus, it improves vitamin B6 deficiency and related symptoms in various cases.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

As pyridoxine hydrochloride, administer 10-100 mg daily divided into 1 to 2 doses via intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intravenous injection. In cases of vitamin B6 dependency, higher doses may be administered. Adjust according to age and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication is an ampoule injection, and great care must be taken when cutting the container to avoid the ingress of glass shards which could cause adverse reactions. Extra caution is necessary when administering to children and the elderly. It should not be administered to patients with hypersensitivity to any of the components or those taking levodopa. Symptoms such as photosensitivity reactions, nausea, headache, and drowsiness may occur, so careful observation of symptoms is required. Long-term high-dose administration may cause neurological disturbances such as seizures, limb paralysis, and ataxia, and recovery may take a long time even after discontinuation. Injection may cause discomfort or pain at the injection site. In cases of large doses administered to newborns or infants, severe side effects such as muscle damage and kidney injury may occur, and the condition must be closely monitored, stopping administration immediately if any abnormal signs occur. High-dose administration during pregnancy may be associated with vitamin B6 dependency syndrome in newborns and infants, so caution is advised. Particularly when administering to newborns and infants, it should begin with small doses and be gradually increased according to the symptoms. After high-dose administration, temporary dependency may arise, warranting a gradual reduction method for discontinuation. This medication can reduce the effectiveness of levodopa when co-administered, so they should not be used together. Additionally, isoniazid, penicillamine, and estrogen preparations may increase the need for vitamin B6, necessitating caution. In patients with ovarian cancer, co-administration of altretamine and cisplatin may reduce neurotoxicity but can decrease therapeutic effectiveness, so they should not be used together. Keep out of reach of children, store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Storing the medication in a different container from the original may cause misuse or degradation of quality, so it must be stored in the original container and tightly closed.
