Improvement of symptoms and urinary flow in benign prostatic hyperplasia, reduction in need for surgery
This medication helps improve symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. It reduces the thickened prostate tissue to facilitate urinary flow, leading to improved urination. It also decreases the frequency of acute urinary retention to reduce discomfort. Additionally, it may reduce the need for surgeries such as transurethral resection of the prostate or prostatectomy if necessary. It is effectively used to manage prostate-related issues.
As finasteride, take 5 mg orally once daily, regardless of meals. Even if symptoms improve during treatment, a minimum treatment duration of 6 months is required.
This drug should not be used in children and women. Particularly, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid handling broken pieces of this drug, as it contains components that may affect male fetuses. During treatment, symptoms of depression or mood changes may occur; if these symptoms develop, consulting a healthcare professional is essential. Patients with allergic reactions to this medication or those with certain genetic issues, as well as those allergic to soybean oil, soy, or peanuts, should avoid this drug. Patients with liver function issues or abnormalities in lipid metabolism should use this drug with caution. Some patients may experience sexual side effects, such as erectile dysfunction, reduced libido, or ejaculation disorders. Long-term use may rarely result in breast-related abnormalities, necessitating regular check-ups. This drug may affect the risk of prostate cancer, so men over 55 should consult with healthcare professionals while using it. While interactions with other medications are minimal, inform healthcare professionals if other medications are being taken. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication, and women who may become pregnant should take special precautions. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children, so do not administer it to children. Elderly patients can use it without special dosage adjustments, but their condition should be monitored closely. This medication can lower prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, so caution is needed when interpreting PSA test results. There is no specific antidote for overdose, but if unusual symptoms appear, visit a healthcare facility immediately. Store this medication out of reach of children and do not transfer it to another container for safety.
