Treatment of gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers, relief of symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease, etc.
This medication is used to treat gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers. It is also effective in relieving symptoms and long-term maintenance therapy for erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease. It can be used in conjunction with antibiotics to enhance treatment effects in patients with gastric ulcers infected with Helicobacter pylori. It is also helpful in the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This medication is widely used for the treatment of ulcers and inflammatory diseases of the stomach and esophagus.
For gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers: the usual adult dosage is 10 mg of rabeprazole sodium orally once daily. Depending on the symptoms, it may be increased to 20 mg orally once daily. Generally, treatment for gastric ulcers lasts up to 8 weeks, and for duodenal ulcers up to 6 weeks. For erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease: 10 mg or 20 mg may be administered orally once daily for 4 to 8 weeks. If proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are used for 8 weeks with no improvement, an additional 8 weeks of 10 mg or 20 mg may be administered twice daily orally. However, the 20 mg twice daily regimen is only for patients with confirmed severe mucosal damage. For symptom relief of gastroesophageal reflux disease: 10 mg should be taken once daily. If symptoms are not controlled after 4 weeks, further medical consultation is necessary. Once symptoms have resolved, as-needed therapy with 10 mg once daily can be used to manage subsequent symptoms. For long-term maintenance therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease: patients may take 10 mg or 20 mg orally daily, depending on individual needs. For Helicobacter pylori eradication: patients infected with Helicobacter pylori should undergo eradication therapy, which is recommended to include a combination of this medication 20 mg, clarithromycin 500 mg, and amoxicillin 1 g, administered twice daily for 7 days. For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: the recommended initial dose for adults is 60 mg orally once daily, and the dose may be adjusted up to 120 mg daily based on individual patient needs. Doses up to 100 mg may be given once daily, while 120 mg should be split into two doses of 60 mg each. Patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome have been treated with this medication for up to 1 year. Hepatic impairment: Adverse reactions of hepatic encephalopathy have been reported in cirrhotic patients; therefore, caution is warranted. Pediatrics: Safety in pediatric patients has not been established. Geriatrics: Caution is warranted due to the common occurrence of reduced liver function.
