Precautions

This medicine should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should not be administered to patients with an allergy to this medication or its components, or those with untreated low calcium levels. Additionally, patients who cannot sit or stand upright for at least 60 minutes or those with esophageal issues that make swallowing difficult should not take this medication. It contains lactose; hence, it should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders. Care should be taken when administering this medication to patients with severe renal insufficiency. While taking this medication, gastrointestinal disturbances such as dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, and rash may occur. Particularly, during the first administration, patients may temporarily experience influenza-like symptoms such as joint pain, muscle pain, fever, chills, and fatigue, which are usually mild and resolve without treatment. This medication may irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, so if symptoms such as esophagitis or esophageal ulcers, or difficulty swallowing occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. Furthermore, patients with gastrointestinal disorders should exercise caution when taking this medication. As a bisphosphonate, cases of jaw osteonecrosis or external auditory canal osteonecrosis have been reported rarely, and oral examinations are recommended before dental treatments. It is advisable to avoid excessive dental treatments while taking this medication. Additionally, severe bone, joint, or muscle pain may occur during the course of this medication, and if this happens, patients should consult a doctor. There is also a possibility of atypical fractures occurring in the femur, so any pain in the thigh or groin should be evaluated. This medication may hinder absorption if taken with food, calcium, aluminum, magnesium, iron, etc., so it should be taken with a sufficient amount of water at least one hour prior to consuming food or medications that contain these components. It is safest not to use this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding. No dosage adjustment is required for older adults, but the safety and effectiveness for children under 18 years have not been established. In cases of overdose, gastrointestinal disturbances or hypocalcemia may appear; do not induce vomiting and maintain an upright position.
