Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and treatment of hyperlipidemia
This medication is used in adults and children to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It specifically decreases the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, aids in recovery after vascular surgery, and helps with chronic stable angina. It is also effective in preventing cardiovascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes and other risk factors for heart disease. For patients with hyperlipidemia, it assists in lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It is also used in some familial hypercholesterolemia patients and those with dyslipidemia who do not respond to dietary interventions. It is used for extensive risk reduction and improvement related to cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia.
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily. If more significant reductions in LDL cholesterol levels are required, it may be initiated at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This medication is administered at doses ranging from 10 to 80 mg once daily. The initial and maintenance doses should be individualized based on the treatment target and patient response, and lipid levels should be assessed within 2 to 4 weeks of initiation and/or dose adjustment.
For pediatric patients (ages 10-17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg per day, while the maximum recommended dose is 20 mg per day. The dosage should be adjusted as per treatment goals with an interval of at least 4 weeks.
This medication may cause muscle-related side effects, so if muscle pain, weakness, or severe fatigue occurs, consult a doctor immediately. It can affect liver function, so patients with liver disease or abnormally high liver function tests should not use it. Pregnant or potentially pregnant women, as well as lactating women, should not take this medication, and if already taking it, must consult a doctor. Children, particularly those under 10 years of age, cannot take this medication, and its long-term safety and efficacy have not been sufficiently studied in individuals under 18. Patients with a history of alcohol dependence or liver disease need to be cautious while taking this medication, and regular liver function tests are recommended. This medication can interact with other drugs, so inform the doctor if taking specific antibiotics, antifungal agents, antivirals, immunosuppressants, antihypertensives, blood sugar-lowering agents, etc. If symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, fever, or malaise occur, report them to a doctor immediately, and blood tests should be performed to check for muscle damage. During the course of this medication, rare respiratory issues such as interstitial lung disease may occur, so if there is difficulty breathing or persistent cough, consult healthcare personnel. Certain foods, such as grapefruit juice, may increase the blood concentration of this medication, so it is advisable to avoid excessive consumption. This medicine contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance should be cautious, and it should not be transferred to another container but stored in the original container. Elderly patients have a higher risk of muscle-related side effects, so they should be closely monitored for symptoms and undergo regular checks. There is no specific antidote for overdose; if suspected, seek medical attention immediately for symptom-specific treatment.
