In postmenopausal women, osteoporosis can weaken bone strength and increase the risk of fractures. This medication helps strengthen bones and increase bone density, reducing fracture risk. Therefore, it is used for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

How to take

Adult dose

Take 1 tablet monthly, regularly on the same day, in the morning, at least 1 hour before consuming food, beverages (excluding water), or other oral medications or dietary supplements (including calcium), with a sufficient amount of water. This medication must be swallowed while standing or sitting upright with a sufficient amount (180-240ml) of water, and lying down for 60 minutes after taking the medication is prohibited. Mineral water may decrease the absorption of this medication.

Child dose

Efficacy and safety in children under 18 years of age have not been studied.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should not be taken by individuals allergic to this medication or its components, patients with untreated hypocalcemia, individuals who cannot sit or stand upright for more than 60 minutes, or those with esophageal dysfunction that may impair swallowing. Additionally, since this medication contains lactose, individuals with genetic problems such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should also avoid it. Patients with severely impaired renal function should use this medication with caution. Taking this medication may cause various side effects such as dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headaches, myalgia, arthralgia, rash, etc. Notably, symptoms similar to influenza, such as arthralgia, myalgia, fever, chills, and fatigue may occur after the first dose, but they are usually mild and transient. Moreover, esophageal issues related to esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, and esophageal strictures may arise, so if there is discomfort swallowing or chest pain when taking the medication, consult a physician immediately. This medication can irritate the gastric mucosa, so patients with gastrointestinal diseases should be cautious, and it should also be used with care when taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Rare incidents of osteonecrosis of the jaw have been reported, so it is advisable to check oral health before dental treatment and avoid excessive dental treatment while on this medication. Rarely, osteonecrosis of the external auditory canal or ocular inflammation may occur, so any abnormal symptoms in the ears or eyes should be reported to healthcare professionals. Prolonged use of this medication may lead to atypical fractures of the femur or other bones, so if pain occurs in the thigh or groin, medical attention should be sought immediately. While taking this medication, food, calcium, antacids, etc., may reduce the absorption of the medication, making it essential not to take any other food or medications for at least one hour after taking this medication. It is safer not to use this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and safety for children under 18 has not been confirmed. Lastly, an overdose of this medication may cause gastrointestinal disorders or hypocalcemia, so it is crucial to adhere to the prescribed usage and dosage, and after taking the medication, do not lie down for a certain period.
