Treatment of osteoarthritis (including of the hip)
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that primarily occurs in the hip and knee joints, causing joint pain and limited movement. This condition arises from damage to the joint cartilage and changes in the bones, leading to discomfort in daily life. This medication is effective for alleviating symptoms of osteoarthritis and improving function. Patients can benefit from reduced joint inflammation and pain, facilitating smooth movement. It is mainly used for degenerative joint disease of the hip and knee joints.
Adults: Administer 50∼100mg of diacerein orally in 1∼2 divided doses after meals. Adjust the dose as appropriate according to symptoms. For patients with a history of loose stools or diarrhea, an initial dose of 50mg once daily is recommended for the first 2-4 weeks, followed by 50mg twice daily.
This medication should not be used in patients with certain diseases. It should not be administered to patients with inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal obstruction syndrome, or unexplained abdominal pain. Additionally, it should not be used in individuals allergic to this medication or its components, those with a history of liver disease, or children under 15 years old. Due to the presence of lactose, it should not be given to patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders. This medication should be used cautiously in patients with a history of small intestine or colon disease, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and elderly individuals over 65 years old. In particular, dosage should be reduced in older adults, and those allergic to the yellow pigment included in this medication should be cautious. During use, gastrointestinal adverse reactions such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and gastric disturbances may occur, and long-term use may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers. Skin itching, rashes, and symptoms of liver dysfunction such as elevated liver enzymes may also occur, requiring caution. Long-term use should always follow a doctor's advice, and if diarrhea occurs, the medication should be discontinued, and a physician should be consulted. Severe diarrhea can lead to dehydration or electrolyte imbalance, necessitating caution. If liver function damage is suspected, medication should be stopped and medical personnel consulted, and it is advisable to avoid alcohol. Caution is needed regarding interactions when used with other drugs. Antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum should be taken with an interval of more than 2 hours, and care should be taken when used with diuretics due to the risk of dehydration or hypokalemia. The risk of arrhythmia may increase when used concomitantly with cardiac glycosides, so consultation with medical personnel is recommended. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to avoid this medication due to reports of delayed bone formation in fetuses from animal studies and the possibility of some components being transferred through breast milk. In case of overdose, severe diarrhea may occur, which may require treatments such as electrolyte replenishment, so it is necessary to notify medical personnel immediately.
