Improvement in blood sugar control for type 2 diabetes
This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy to assist in blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes who use both gemigliptin and metformin. In other words, it is a medication that effectively improves blood sugar levels, aiding in diabetes management.
This medication is generally administered with the evening meal, and the dosage is increased gradually to reduce gastrointestinal side effects associated with metformin. The 50/500 mg extended-release tablet or 50/1000 mg extended-release tablet of this medication is taken once daily, with one tablet per dose. Patients taking the 25/500 mg extended-release tablet or 25/1000 mg extended-release tablet of this medication take it once daily with two tablets simultaneously. Currently, for patients not being treated with metformin and requiring gemigliptin 50 mg, the recommended starting dosage of this medication is gemigliptin 50 mg/metformin 500 mg extended-release tablet once daily, and the dosage is gradually increased to reduce gastrointestinal side effects of metformin. For patients who cannot achieve adequate blood sugar control with metformin monotherapy, combination therapy with sulfonylureas, or combination therapy with metformin and insulin, the initial dose of this medication should provide 50 mg of gemigliptin once daily along with the existing dosage of metformin. When converting from immediate-release metformin to extended-release formulations, blood sugar control should be closely monitored, and dosage adjustments should be appropriately made. When this medication is co-administered with sulfonylureas or insulin, a reduction in the dosage of sulfonylureas or insulin may be required to lower the risk of hypoglycemia. For patients transitioning from combination therapy with gemigliptin and metformin to this medication, the starting dose can be based on the existing metformin and gemigliptin dosages. When converting from immediate-release metformin to extended-release formulations, blood sugar control should be closely monitored, and dosage adjustments should be appropriately made. The maximum recommended daily dose is gemigliptin 50 mg and extended-release metformin 2000 mg. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been specifically evaluated in patients transitioning from other hypoglycemic agents. Any changes in treatment for type 2 diabetes must be carried out under careful monitoring since they can induce changes in blood sugar control. This medication must be swallowed whole and should never be crushed, cut, or chewed.
This medication helps control blood sugar. However, there are some important precautions to be aware of while taking this medication. First, there is a rare risk of developing a dangerous condition called lactic acidosis, so if you experience sudden muscle pain, difficulty breathing, weakness, or abdominal pain, you should inform your doctor immediately. Additionally, taking this medication in conjunction with insulin or other diabetes medications may cause hypoglycemia, so blood sugar changes should be monitored closely. Before undergoing a radiological examination using iodine contrast agents, this medication should be discontinued at least 48 hours prior, and you should resume taking it only after confirming that kidney function is normal following the examination. It is advisable for pregnant or nursing women not to take this medication. Regular monitoring of kidney function and blood vitamin B12 levels is required during treatment. Excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided, and the medication should be paused for a period before surgery.
