Treatment of hypertension and hypercholesterolemia and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used for patients who need to take both olmesartan medoxomil and rosuvastatin. Olmesartan medoxomil is primarily used to treat essential hypertension. Meanwhile, rosuvastatin is effective for several lipid disorders including hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia, particularly as an adjunctive treatment in cases where diet and exercise alone do not achieve adequate control. Additionally, rosuvastatin helps delay the progression of atherosclerosis and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It particularly plays a role in reducing the risks of issues that may occur after myocardial infarction, stroke, or vascular revascularization. Therefore, this medication is useful in improving the health status of patients with both hypertension and lipid disorders.
For olmesartan medoxomil, the recommended starting dose is 10mg once daily and can be taken regardless of meals. If blood pressure control is insufficient at this dose, it may be increased to 20mg once daily, and can be raised up to 40mg maximum. Dose adjustments are required for patients with renal or liver impairment, while elderly patients do not require dose adjustment. For rosuvastatin, the starting dose is 5mg once daily.
The safety and efficacy in pediatric patients under 18 years of age have not been established.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn if taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. It should not be used in individuals who have an allergy to any of its components, in pregnant or breastfeeding women, or in fertile women not using appropriate contraception. Patients with severely impaired kidney function or those undergoing kidney dialysis, patients with severe liver dysfunction, patients with bile duct obstruction, and those with certain muscle diseases should not take this medication. Particularly, caution is required for patients taking high doses of rosuvastatin (40mg) who have a history of kidney function impairment, hypothyroidism, or genetic muscle disorders due to increased risk of muscle damage. This medication contains lactose, so it should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders. Patients with reduced blood volume or low sodium levels may experience hypotension at the beginning of treatment, so their condition should be monitored carefully. Patients with impaired kidney function or kidney transplant recipients should have their kidney function and electrolyte status checked regularly through blood tests. There is a risk of hyperkalemia, so especially for patients with heart failure or kidney disease, blood potassium levels should be monitored closely. Dizziness may occur during treatment, so caution should be exercised when driving or operating dangerous machinery. If symptoms such as liver dysfunction or muscle pain appear, patients should notify healthcare professionals immediately, and liver function tests and muscle enzyme tests should be performed if necessary. This medication can interact with other drugs, so if patients are taking other medications, they must inform healthcare providers. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in children and adolescents under 18 years old, so its use is not recommended. Elderly patients may have increased plasma concentrations of this medication, so dose adjustments and caution are necessary. In case of overdose, symptoms such as blood pressure reduction and cardiac arrhythmias may appear, requiring immediate medical attention.
