Improvement of erectile dysfunction
This medication is primarily used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction refers to a condition where men experience problems with sexual function, and this medication helps improve it to enable normal sexual activity.
For sildenafil, the recommended dose of 25-50 mg should be chewed and taken approximately 1 hour before sexual activity once daily. Depending on individual cases, it may be taken from 4 hours to 30 minutes before sexual activity. The dosage may be adjusted based on efficacy and tolerance. Specific patients (aged 65 and older, liver failure, severe kidney failure, those taking CYP3A4 inhibitors, those using ritonavir) should start with a dosage of 25 mg.
This medication should not be taken with nitrate medications or NO donors, as it may lead to excessively low blood pressure. Patients taking such medications should avoid this drug. Patients with heart or vascular issues should consult a doctor before using this medication, and sexual activity may be risky for those with cardiovascular conditions, so its use is not recommended. This medication can temporarily lower blood pressure by dilating blood vessels, so patients with cardiovascular diseases should exercise caution. Patients with severe arrhythmias, heart failure, unstable angina, low or high blood pressure, or retinitis pigmentosa should be cautious, as safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established for them. If an erection lasts more than 4 hours, consult a doctor immediately, as untreated prolonged erections can damage penile tissue and result in loss of erectile function. Patients with heart valve problems or impaired blood pressure control may be sensitive to this medication and should use it carefully. When used in conjunction with certain antiviral medications, the blood concentration of this medication may significantly increase, requiring dose adjustments. The artificial sweetener aspartame contained in this medication should not be administered to patients with genetic diseases such as phenylketonuria. Those who are hypersensitive to this medication or its components, or are taking organic nitrates, should not use it. Patients for whom sexual activity is not recommended due to cardiovascular disease, those with severe liver failure, hypotensive or hypertensive patients, those with recent cardiovascular disease history, patients with retinitis pigmentosa, those currently taking other erectile dysfunction treatments, minors under 18, and women should avoid this medication. Caution should be taken for patients with penile deformities or bleeding disorders, elderly patients, those with kidney or liver failure, and those taking specific medications. Dose adjustments may be necessary considering the potential for adverse reactions. The use of this medication may cause side effects such as headache, facial flushing, dyspepsia, nasal congestion, dizziness, visual disturbances, which are mostly temporary and mild to moderate. Serious side effects such as cardiovascular adverse reactions, sudden vision loss, and hearing reduction have been reported rarely, and if abnormal symptoms occur, medical attention should be sought immediately. Cardiovascular status must be evaluated prior to sexual activity, and this medication should not be used as an aphrodisiac or stamina booster and does not prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Caution is required while driving or operating machinery, as visual disturbances or dizziness may occur. There are many interactions with other medications, especially caution is needed when combined with certain antibiotics, antivirals, and antihypertensives, and dosage should be adjusted according to the physician's instructions. Overdosage can worsen symptoms, so the recommended dosage should be strictly followed and kept out of reach of children.
