Reduction of risk for myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hypercholesterolemia
This medication is mainly used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it lowers the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgery, and angina in adults with multiple risk factors or type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it is effective in reducing the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure hospitalization in patients who already have cardiovascular disease. This medication is also used to treat hyperlipidemia, improving cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia that cannot be controlled by diet. It helps lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in pediatric patients aged 10 years and older with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Thus, this medication is effectively used for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia.
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended starting dose is 10 mg once daily. Patients requiring more LDL cholesterol reduction may start at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dosing range is 10 to 80 mg once daily. The initial and maintenance dosing should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient response, and lipid levels should be analyzed within 2-4 weeks after starting therapy.
For pediatric patients (10-17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the recommended starting dose is 10 mg daily, and the maximum recommended dose is 20 mg daily. Dosing should be adjusted appropriately at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
