For example, individuals with galactose intolerance, congenital lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption may experience health issues if this medication is taken. When taking this medication, side effects such as abnormal liver function, constipation, rash, itching, and diarrhea may occur. Abnormal liver function may present as elevated liver enzyme levels in blood tests, so caution is needed. Elderly patients may have decreased physical function, so treatment should start with a lower dose and be carefully monitored. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should only use this medication when the therapeutic benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus, as the effects on the fetus are not well established. Additionally, breastfeeding women are advised to avoid this medication if possible, or to discontinue breastfeeding if taking it, as it may be excreted in breast milk.
