Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of high cholesterol.
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, especially in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease and patients with type 2 diabetes. It also reduces the risk of hospitalization due to vascular interventions, angina, and congestive heart failure. For patients with hyperlipidemia, it effectively lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels when combined with a diet, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It can be safely used in pediatric patients with familial hypercholesterolemia and helps manage cardiovascular disease risk factors. This medication is effectively used to improve cardiovascular health.
For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily. If a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol levels is required, it may be started with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. Dosing should be in the range of 10-80 mg once daily, individualized according to treatment goals and patient response. Patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia should be given 10-80 mg once daily.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10-17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, and the maximum dose is 20 mg per day. The administration dosage is adjusted according to therapeutic goals, with adjustments made every 4 weeks as needed.
This medication may pose a risk of muscle problems; therefore, if muscle pain, weakness, or significantly elevated creatine kinase levels occur, use should be discontinued immediately. Patients with active liver disease or severely impaired liver function, those with muscle diseases, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, children under 10 years old, and those taking specific antiviral treatments should not take this medication. Caution is advised for individuals with a history of alcohol dependence or liver disease, those with impaired kidney function, hypothyroid patients, those with a past of muscle disorders, and elderly patients. This medication is generally well tolerated but can occasionally cause various side effects such as liver function abnormalities, muscle pain, indigestion, headache, allergic reactions, and skin rashes. If symptoms occur, consult a doctor. If muscle pain is accompanied by fatigue or fever, contact a doctor immediately and undergo testing, as discontinuation may be necessary in severe cases. As this medication is metabolized in the liver, patients with poor liver function may require dosage adjustments and should stop use if symptoms of hepatitis (nausea, vomiting, malaise, etc.) appear. Appropriate contraception must be practiced during treatment. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this medication. This medication may interact with several drugs, thus it is crucial to inform your doctor or pharmacist of any other medications being taken, especially when co-administered with specific antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, or immunosuppressants. In case of overdose, there are no specific antidotes; therefore, treatment should be symptomatic, and liver function and muscle condition should be monitored periodically. Keep out of reach of children, and it is safest to store it in the original container. Elderly patients and those with renal impairment are at higher risk for myopathy; hence careful observation during treatment is necessary.
