View approved original text

This medication helps improve symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and reduces the enlarged prostate tissue. It also improves urinary flow issues where urination is difficult and decreases the frequency of acute urinary retention. Thus, it can help reduce the need for surgical treatments such as prostate surgery or resection. Overall, it is used to maintain prostate health and alleviate symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

As Finasteride, take 5 mg once daily orally, regardless of meals. Even if symptoms improve, treatment should continue for at least 6 months.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in children or women. In particular, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should not handle broken pieces of this medication, as it may pose a potential risk to the fetus, especially a male fetus. While taking this medication, mood changes or mental health issues such as depression may occur, so it is essential to consult a healthcare professional immediately if these symptoms appear. Patients with allergies to this medication or genetic issues such as lactose intolerance should also not be administered. Patients with impaired liver function should use this medication cautiously. The medication is generally well tolerated; however, sexual function-related side effects can occur, including erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and ejaculation disorders. It is important to consult healthcare providers if these symptoms arise. There have been reports of an increased risk of male breast cancer with long-term use, but a clear causal relationship has not yet been established. This medication may increase the risk of developing certain high-grade forms of prostate cancer, so it should be used with caution. Interactions with other drugs are minimal, but if you are taking other medications, be sure to inform your healthcare provider. Pregnant or nursing women should not use this medication, and caution should be exercised since taking it during pregnancy may affect a male fetus. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in children, so it is not used in this population. There is no need for special dosage adjustments for the elderly; however, regular monitoring by healthcare providers is necessary during use. This medication can lower prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, which may affect test results; this should be considered when performing PSA tests. There is no specific treatment for overdose, but caution should be taken not to exceed the recommended dose. Store this medication in a place out of reach of children and do not transfer it to other containers.
