Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hypercholesterolemia
This medication helps lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It is particularly effective in reducing risks related to various cardiac and vascular conditions such as myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgeries, and angina. It controls cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with hyperlipidemia and increases HDL-cholesterol levels, complementing dietary effects. Additionally, it is used to lower total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels in pediatric and adult patients with a family history or several risk factors. This drug is effectively used for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and improvement of dyslipidemia.
The recommended initial dose of atorvastatin is 10 mg once daily, and for those requiring greater LDL-cholesterol reduction, treatment may start at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. This drug is administered at a dosage range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. Lipid levels should be analyzed and dosages adjusted within 2 to 4 weeks after starting and/or adjusting the dose.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (ages 10 to 17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 20 mg once daily. Dosage should be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
This drug may cause adverse reactions in muscles, so if symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness occur, especially with fever or malaise, inform your doctor immediately. This drug can affect liver function, so patients with liver disease or elevated liver function tests should not use it, and regular liver function tests should be conducted during treatment. Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, and breastfeeding mothers should not take this medication, and fertile women should use appropriate contraception while taking it. This medication is not to be administered to children under 10 years of age or to patients with specific genetic lactose intolerance. The risk of muscle-related side effects may be increased in patients with kidney disease, so caution is advised in those with impaired kidney function. This drug may interact with certain antibiotics, antifungals, and antivirals, which may require dose adjustments or discontinuation when taken together. Taking this drug with grapefruit juice may increase blood concentrations, raising the risk of side effects, so grapefruit juice should be avoided. During the course of taking this medication, if you experience symptoms such as muscle pain, fatigue, or fever, consult medical personnel immediately and conduct blood tests if needed to check for muscle damage. Additionally, this drug can cause severe allergic reactions in the skin, so if rash, itching, or vesicular skin changes occur, stop using it immediately and seek medical attention. Elderly individuals or patients with impaired liver or kidney function are at higher risk of side effects from this drug and should use it with extra caution, requiring regular monitoring. In cases of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so appropriate treatment should be administered based on symptoms, along with liver function and muscle-related tests. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in its original container to prevent degradation or misuse.
